7 Bathroom Design Trends Virginia Homeowners Are Choosing in 2026

From zellige tile and curbless showers to smart mirrors and warm metallic hardware — these are the bathroom design trends we're installing most in Virginia homes right now, with practical advice on what works and what to skip.

Bathroom design evolves constantly, but the best trends are the ones that combine beauty with functionality — the ones you'll still love in ten years. Based on what we're installing most frequently across Virginia in 2026, here are seven trends worth considering for your bathroom remodel.

1. Curbless Walk-In Showers

The traditional shower with a raised threshold is disappearing. Curbless (also called zero-threshold or barrier-free) showers create a seamless transition from the bathroom floor into the shower. The result is visually larger, easier to clean, and accessible for all ages and mobility levels.

The key to a successful curbless shower is proper drainage engineering. The entire shower floor must be pitched correctly toward a linear drain — typically 1/4 inch per foot. We use Schluter Kerdi or Wedi waterproofing systems to ensure zero water migration. This is not a DIY-friendly project — improper waterproofing is the number one cause of bathroom renovation failures.

2. Large-Format Porcelain Tile

Tiles are getting bigger. We're installing a lot of 24x48-inch and even 48x48-inch porcelain tiles in bathrooms. Fewer grout lines mean a cleaner, more expansive visual and significantly less maintenance. Modern porcelain can convincingly replicate marble, concrete, terrazzo, and natural stone at a fraction of the cost and with zero maintenance concerns.

For bathroom floors specifically, always choose a tile with adequate slip resistance — look for a DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) rating of 0.42 or higher. We always recommend matte finishes over polished for bathroom floors.

3. Warm Metallic Hardware

Brushed gold, aged brass, and matte black continue to dominate hardware selections. The chrome-everything era is firmly over. We're seeing many clients mix metals intentionally — a brushed gold shower system paired with matte black cabinet hardware, for example — which adds depth and visual interest.

One practical note: choose PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finishes over plated finishes. PVD finishes are bonded at a molecular level and resist tarnishing, scratching, and corrosion far better than traditional plating. They cost slightly more but maintain their appearance for decades.

4. Floating Vanities

Wall-mounted floating vanities make bathrooms feel larger by revealing floor space underneath. They also make cleaning easier — no more awkward mopping around vanity legs. We're building custom floating vanities in white oak, walnut, and painted finishes, typically with integrated undermount sinks and soft-close drawer systems.

The installation requires blocking inside the wall during rough-in — the vanity must be anchored to studs or a reinforced backing, not just drywall. If you're planning a floating vanity, make sure your contractor knows before drywall goes up.

5. Heated Floors

Electric radiant floor heating has gone from luxury upgrade to expected feature in Virginia bathroom remodels. The cost is surprisingly reasonable — typically $10–$15 per square foot for the heating mat, plus a thermostat. For a 50-square-foot bathroom, you're looking at $500–$750 in materials plus installation labor.

We install heated floors under porcelain and natural stone tile. The system sits within the thin-set mortar beneath the tile, adding minimal height to the floor assembly. A programmable thermostat can warm the floor before your alarm goes off — which, during a Virginia January, feels like pure luxury.

6. Textured and 3D Wall Tile

Flat subway tile is being replaced by tiles with texture, dimension, and character. Fluted (vertically ribbed) tiles, scalloped shapes, and handmade zellige tiles add depth and shadow play that changes throughout the day as natural light shifts. We're installing textured tiles most often as shower accent walls and behind freestanding tubs.

Zellige tiles deserve special mention — these handcrafted Moroccan tiles have slight imperfections and color variations that give them incredible warmth. No two tiles are identical, which is the entire point. If you want a bathroom with soul and character, zellige is worth the premium.

7. Smart Mirrors and Integrated Lighting

Backlit LED mirrors with integrated defoggers, dimming controls, and even built-in speakers are becoming standard in primary bathrooms. They provide excellent task lighting for the vanity area while serving as ambient lighting for nighttime use. Many include a color temperature adjustment — cooler light for makeup application, warmer light for evening ambiance.

We typically hardwire smart mirrors during the electrical rough-in phase, which provides a cleaner installation than plug-in models. If you're planning a bathroom remodel, discuss mirror selection early so your electrician can position the wiring correctly.

Which Trends Are Worth the Investment?

All seven of these trends offer genuine long-term value — they're not fast fashion that will look dated in three years. If we had to prioritize, we'd say curbless showers, heated floors, and quality tile choices give the best return on investment. They improve daily comfort, reduce maintenance, and appeal to future buyers.

The best approach is to work with a designer or design-build contractor who can help you select trends that complement each other and fit your budget. At Entire Builders, our design team works with every client to create cohesive, timeless bathroom spaces — not just trendy ones.
